4 alleged NPA rebels slain in Sorsogon clash
MANILA, Philippines — Four suspected communist guerillas were killed in an encounter with government troops in Sorsogon province on Monday, a spokesman for the Philippine Army said.
Troops from the 22nd Infantry Battalion were on patrol in Salvacion Village, Sorsogon City after being tipped off on the presence of New People’s Army (NPA) fighters in the area, when they encountered at least five rebels at around 4:30 p.m., said Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Torres Jr.
Four rebels were killed and their remains recovered, Torres said. He could not ascertain however whether the remaining insurgent was captured or was able to escape.
Troops also recovered three M16 rifles, a Garand rifle, two handheld radios, four bandoleers, jungle packs, and documents of “high intelligence value” from the rebels, the spokesman said in a text message.
The 7,100-strong NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), has been waging a guerilla campaign from the countryside for nearly four decades.
