MANILA, Philippines — Water concessionaries reduced their rates for 230,000 low-income households in Metro Manila by 20 percent starting Monday, Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye said.

Bunye said the Manila Water Company Inc. (MWCI), which handles the east zone, and the Maynilad Water Services Inc. (MWSI) heeded government’s request to reduce water rates for poor consumers.

With the reduction, the 80,000 households or 700,000 people in the Manila Water concession area will pay P71 instead of P88 per month. This includes residents in Marikina, Pasig, Taguig, San Juan, Madaluyong, and parts of Quezon City, Bunye said.

In the Maynilad area, an estimated 150,000 households or 1,350,000 people who use 10 cubic meters of water or less per month will now pay P95.96, down from P116.46, the spokesman said.

“The MWSS [Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System] together with the MWCI and MWSI are continually exploring other means of further reducing the water rates,” Bunye said.
