MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has “seen the worst” as far as threats to topple her government was concerned, National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales said.

Gonzales said the threat “peaked” with the February 29 rally in Makati City where thousands marched to press for her resignation over the national broadband network scandal.

“I think we have reached the end, the peak of the scandals, [the] intrigues, everything. I think we have reached it,” Gonzales told reporters before the start of a Cabinet meeting at the Palace.

“What more issues can come out? What’s the worse thing you can expect from this issue? Everything has been said. The worst lies had been expressed,” he said.

Gonzales said the possible appearance of former socioeconomic planning secretary Romulo Neri before a Senate investigation on the broadband dispute, and questions on the constitutionality of the tripartite seismic survey agreement of the Philippines, China, and Vietnam were unlikely to worsen the security situation.

With Congress set to go on recess and with students set to go on summer break, Gonzales said the President’s foes’ next move could be to push for her impeachment by October, when the one year ban between complaints expires.

“I’m not saying it’s over. I’m just saying [that] we have seen the worst… There will be attempts to impeach her, after that, it’s over,” Gonzales said.
