MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said public school teachers may receive a salary increase by the middle of the year.

In a speech before students and teachers at Malacañang’s Rizal Hall on Thursday, Arroyo detailed how the government would spend this year’s P200-billion education budget, which includes a “provision” for a salary increase for public school teachers.

“There is a provision for a salary increase by the middle of the year,” Arroyo said before she was interrupted by loud applause. “Maybe we can do it in the coming school year, in the middle of the year.”

She added that P1 billion would also be spent to train teachers in Math and Science.

The President said this year’s allocation for education was the “biggest percentage [of the budget] in a very long time.”

Of the P200-billion budget for education, the President said P150 billion would be given to the Department of Education (DepEd), while the rest will be given to the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA), and state colleges and universities.

She said P6 billion will be spent for the construction of 11,000 classrooms and the purchase of 35 million text books.

The President also said the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) should be “strengthened” because she wanted to follow the “doctrine of a citizen’s army.”

  1. I just hope that this salary increase would materialize. I am contented being a teacher, however, the high cost of living makes me think not only twice, thrice or a hundred times if I wanted to follow the droves of teachers going abroad. I am a Master Teacher II at the age of 28. I have two kids who are asthmatic and my upcoming clothing and productivity is not enough to buy their medicines! I browse through the internet to find jobs abroad. In Missouri a newly hired teacher would mean $ 30, 000.00 salary… Whew! Speaking of a decent living. Even if I can only have a net pay of 10, 000 pesos that would be enough. My net pay is only 3, 000.00. Lending are easier places to go when getting a loan. A lot easier than GSIS…
