MANILA, Philippines — Marine Colonel Ariel Querubin, linked to an alleged February 2006 coup plot, was taken to the intensive care unit of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Medical Center on Tuesday after suffering from chest pains, his wife said.

On Wednesday, Querubin will undergo a coronary angiography, or an x-ray of blood vessels in the heart, at the Philippine Heart Center, Maria Flor Querubin said.

“Ariel had unbearable chest pains again around midnight last night. So he is still under observation,” Mrs. Querubin said in a text message to reporters.

A recipient of the Medal of Valor, the highest combat honor in the military, Querubin is among 28 officers facing court martial on mutiny charges over an alleged plot to lead soldiers withdraw support from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Querubin complained of shortness of breath at around 3 a.m. Tuesday and was brought to the Camp Aguinaldo hospital four hours later at 7 a.m., his wife said.

The Marine officer is among the 24 accused officers detained at the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), also inside military general headquarters.

“He [Querubin] had to walk out of the detention compound because no vehicle can go in the detention area,” Mrs. Querubin said.

It took another two hours before Querubin was transferred to the AFP Medical Center. He had to pay for the medicine for his muscle spasms since it was not available at the Camp Aguinaldo hospital, she said.

Querubin had been hospitalized in 2007 after his malaria recurred.
