MANILA, Philippines–The Philippine Air Force (PAF) will refurbish one C-130 cargo plane that will be used solely for disaster response and humanitarian works, PAF Chief Lieutenant General Pedrito Cadungog said Sunday.

The project would cost P1 billion, and Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has given his “commitment” to fund it, Cadungog said in a phone interview.

“We will dedicate it [C-130] to our National Development Support Command (NDSC), which is involved in engineering works, and for disaster relief operations,” the PAF commanding general said.

“That’s part of our mandate, to support the government for non-military missions, especially with the coming typhoons,” he said.

The PAF has two operational C-130 planes while one is undergoing maintenance, he said.

Due to difficulty in sourcing spare parts, Cadungog said the maintenance work on the third operational C-130 would finish by September, while the refurbishing of the fourth aircraft would finish in 2009.
