MANILA, Philippines — Armed Forces chief Lieutenant General Alexander Yano assured business leaders on Wednesday that the “problem” of military adventurism has been “licked.”

Yano became the first Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to set foot on the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) trading floor, where he rang the closing bell even if he was late, arriving 30 minutes after trading closed at 12:10 p.m. because he had been held up at his confirmation hearing at the Senate, where he was recommended to a four-star general promotion.

The irony was not lost on Yano, who noted that the sites of past military uprisings were within a “five-kilometer radius” from the Ayala Stock Exchange building, in the heart of the country’s financial district.

The military chief later met with business leaders over lunch at the PSE board room, where PSE President Francisco Lim announced that the bourse would host seminars for soldiers about their investment options.

“I know that you are all concerned, not just because you are in business, but almost always [you are] the target of military adventurism,” Yano said in a speech.

“I am happy to tell you that there had been no additional personalities aside from those core leaders that have been detained,” Yano said, referring to suspected coup plotters. “We feel that that we have successfully licked the problem.”

On November 29, 2007, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, a former Navy lieutenant, and Army Brigadier General Danilo Lim led the Magdalo group of rebel soldiers in a siege of the Manila Peninsula Hotel to press for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s resignation on corruption and election fraud charges.

On July 27, 2003, the Magdalo group seized the former Oakwood luxury apartments to protest alleged corruption in government, and the military’s alleged involvement in bombings in the south.

In December 1989, the bloodiest coup attempt against former president Corazon Aquino was staged in the Makati business district. Lim and Marine Colonel Ariel Querubin, who were then junior officers, were key players in that attempt.

Yano said he was holding dialogues with soldiers, warning them against adventurism, and with politicians, businessmen, and other stakeholders, to warn them against agitating the troops to intervene in politics.

The military chief said he was telling soldiers that military adventurism is a “serious offense” that could lead to jail time, and that unlike in the past, they could not get out of the charges with mere push-ups.

“[If] every time there is an upheaval in our country, we would call on the military as a quick fix, easy solution then we are not trying to nurture that young democracy,” he said.
