MANILA, Philippines — Army chief Lieutenant General Victor Ibrado has ordered an investigation into possible lapses that led to a raid by suspected communist guerillas on an Army militia detachment in Compostela Valley province over the weekend.

“We want to find out what really happened, if there are lapses, to find out what the lapses were,” Irado told reporters on Monday. “Definitely some people will be punished for whatever lapses that happened.”

The newly-appointed Army Inspector General, Brigadier General Ruperto Pabustan, is leading the investigation, Ibrado said.

Fourteen rifles were lost to suspected New People’s Army (NPA) fighters, who raided a patrol base of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographic Unit (CAFGU) in Linda village, Nabunturan town on Saturday afternoon.

Ibrado said he was “bothered” by the raid, which followed burning of delivery vans in the region by the rebels recently.
