MANILA, Philippines — A New People’s Army (NPA) female combatant was killed following a firefight between communist guerillas and government troops in Camarines Sur province at dawn Saturday, a military spokesman said.

Troops from the 42nd Infantry Battalion and the police were on patrol in Tingtingon village, Lagonoy town at around 5:20 a.m. when they encountered a group of NPA fighters, Armed Forces spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Torres Jr. said.

Two M16 rifles were recovered from the rebels. There were no casualties on the government side, Torres said.

The identity of the slain rebel was not immediately available.

Earlier Saturday, at around 3:30 a.m., Army troops overran an NPA camp in Quezon town, Bukidnon province. The three-hour firefight left three rebels killed and three soldiers wounded.

Armed Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Alexander Yano congratulated the troops for Saturday’s engagements and urged them to “press on the fight and sustain the gains toward the defeat of the insurgents,” Torres said in a text message.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has given security forces until the end of her term in 2010 to “defeat” the communist insurgency, “destroy” Islamic extremist groups, and “contain” the Moro rebellion.

At the end of the first quarter, the military estimated the strength of the NPA, the armed wing of the CPP, at around 5,000.

MANILA, Philippines — Three suspected communist guerillas were killed while three government troopers were wounded following an encounter in the southern province of Bukidnon before dawn on Saturday, a spokesman for the Philippine Army said.

Troops also overran the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels’ camp, also the headquarters of a regional committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), in Sta. Cruz village, Quezon town, after the three-hour encounter that started at 3:30 a.m., said Lieutenant Colonel Romeo Brawner Jr.

The three fatalities were identified only by their aliases: Grace, Jake, and Tonio, Brawner said in a text message.

The three wounded Army troopers were brought to a military hospital in Cagayan de Oro City, Armed Forces spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Torres Jr. said in a separate text message.

Three rifles, a laptop computer, a USB thumb drive, eight landmines, three sacks of bomb materials, a power generator, and a printer were recovered from the rebel camp, and two global positioning system (GPS) device units, the Army spokesman said.
