MANILA, Philippines — The killing of a Moro rebel commander in Zamboanga Sibugay province over the weekend preempted the kidnapping of a “prominent personality” in Zamboanga City, the Armed Forces spokesman said Monday.

Commander Kiddie Abdulsalam, a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) special operations group, and his alleged right-hand man, Utoh Musa, were killed in a firefight Saturday afternoon with Army soldiers and military intelligence agents who swooped down on their lair in Kabasalan town.

Abdulsalam is the alleged mastermind of the kidnapping of Italian priest Giancarlo Bossi in Payao town, Zamboanga Sibugay province in June 2007. Bossi was released in Lanao del Norte province after 40 days in captivity.

“We gathered that at the time of the encounter, they [Abdulsalam’s group] were planning to kidnap a prominent personality in Zamboanga City, so that was thwarted,” Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Torres Jr. said.

“The neutralization of Commander Kiddie is considered a big accomplishment against the terrorists, considering he is one of the most wanted [men] in Mindanao,” he added.

Torres said Abdulsalam’s neutralization was unlikely to affect peace negotiations between the government and the MILF, because the secessionist organization’s leadership had “disowned” the slain commander.
