MANILA, Philippines – Suspected communist rebels burned the generator set of a Globe Telecom Inc. cell site in the southern province of Davao Oriental at dawn Tuesday, a regional military spokesman said.

Major Armand Rico, public information officer of the Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) said this was due to the firm’s continued refusal to pay “revolutionary tax.”

At around 5 a.m., seven New People’s Army (NPA) guerillas scaled the fence of the cell site compound in Ban-ao village, Bangaga town, and disarmed the security guard, said Rico.

The rebels tried to open the cabin of the facility, but the guard did not give them the key, so they doused a generator set with gasoline and set the equipment ablaze before escaping, Rico said.

The cell site remains. operational, running on a back-up generator, he said in a text message to reporters.

“This attack is a possible extortion attempt by the NPA,” he said.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has given security forces until the end of her term in 2010 to “defeat” the NPA, the 5,470-strong armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), which has been waging a guerilla campaign from the countryside for nearly four decades.
