MANILA, Philippines — Suspected communist rebels burned a generator set outside a mining tunnel in Compostela Valley province at dawn Wednesday, a regional military spokesman said.

At around 5 a.m., around 20 New People’s Army (NPA) guerillas doused gasoline on the generator outside the Maangab tunnel of Philco Mining Corp. in Camanlangan village, New Bataan town, then set it ablaze, Major Armand Rico, spokesman of the Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom), said.

The lone security guard, identified as Jaybee Torres, witnessed the burning, Rico said.

Troops from the 28th Infantry Battalion were dispatched to pursue the rebels, who withdrew towards the direction of nearby Maragusan town, Rico said.
