MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Avelino Razon Jr. has alerted ground commanders in the wake of successive raids by the communist New People’s Army (NPA) on police stations in the country’s south.

Several firearms were lost when rebels raided police stations in Banay Banay town, Davao Oriental province, and Siargao Island over the past two weeks.

“My instruction for our regional directors, provincial directors, and even chiefs of police, is to beef up their alert to preclude these attacks by the NPA,” Razon told reporters in Makati City late Tuesday evening.

Asked if the rebels were able to cart away a substantial number of firearms in these raids, Razon said: “Hindi naman [not really], although these firearms could be used in their operations.”

Military estimates place the strength of the NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) at 5,617.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has given security forces until the end of her term in 2010 to end the nearly four-decade old guerilla campaign of the NPA.
