MANILA, Philippines — Tropical storm “Julian” intensified further as it drifted into the South China Sea on Monday evening, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

But even as the storm moved out of the country, it will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing rains to Luzon, mainly the western section, the state weather bureau said.

At 4 p.m., the eye of the storm, which packs maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour, with gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour, was spotted 290 kilometers northwest of Laoag City, it said.

Moving west at 15 kilometers per hour, the storm was forecast to be at 320 kilometers west northwest of Laoag City by Tuesday afternoon, it said.

Public storm signal number 1 (30-60 kilometer per hour winds) remained over the Ilocos provinces, Abra, and La Union, PAGASA said.

Residents in low-lying areas and mountain slopes were warned against landslides and flashfloods.
