MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has alerted its ground commanders, including those in Metro Manila, to heighten security in urban centers to thwart a possible spillover of violence from the south, where security forces and Moro rebels are at a standoff.

“We have alerted our regional directors, even outside Metro Manila, outside Mindanao, to target harden possible targets of terrorist activities,” Director Silverio Alarcio, chief of the PNP Directorate for Operations, told a news conference in Camp Crame.

“We are anticipating possible violence in the urban centers, these are the usual targets,” Alarcio added.

Asked to clarify if the order covers the national capital region, Alarcio said: “Yes, including Metro Manila.”

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has defied a 24-hour government ultimatum for them to leave several villages in North Cotabato province, forcing authorities to negotiate for them to stand down.

The rebels allegedly seized farmlands and burned houses in the villages.

But military and police officials say negotiations with the rebels are continuing and the MILF may finish pulling out its fighters within the day.
