MANILA/ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines—Six people were wounded when a grenade went off in front of a bus station in downtown Zamboanga City on Wednesday evening, a military official said.

The explosion occurred at around 6:40 p.m. along Mayor Climaco Avenue wounding bystanders on the sidewalk, said Lieutenant Colonel Agane Adriatico, spokesman of the Army’s First Infantry Division.

The bus station is located beside a police station, Adriatico said in a phone interview.

A grenade was recovered from the scene but it was not immediately clear if it caused the explosion, he said.

Senior Superintendent Lurimer Detran, city police chief, said the grenade’s pin was found some 20 meters away from where it went off.

Adriatico said investigators have yet to determine if the blast was related to fighting between government troops and Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels in Central Mindanao.
