MANILA, Philippines — A Marine officer died in an ambush by suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen in Sulu province late Tuesday afternoon, the commandant of the Philippine Marine Corps said.

However, Captain Abduhari Sulani fought back, killing one of his two attackers and wounding the other, who was later captured by government troops, Major General Ben Dolorfino said in a phone interview Wednesday.

Sulani, in civilian clothes, was riding a motorcycle in Liang village, Patikul town at around 5 p.m. when the two gunmen fired at him.

The slain officer was on his way to the capital town of Jolo from the 5th Marine Battalion Landing Team headquarters on Buhanginan beach in Patikul when he was attacked, Dolorfino said.

“The attackers are most likely Abu Sayyaf. They are the ones operating in the area,” Dolorfino said, adding that the attack was most likely planned because Sulani was attacked even when he was in civilian clothes.
