MANILA, Philippines – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo assured Filipinos Wednesday that her government was moving mitigate the high cost of fuel and basic commodities.

“The high price of oil and gasoline and everyday commodities hits our poor the hardest. The high price of oil is a global issue and outside the control of the government,” Arroyo said in a speech in Quirino province Wednesday.

“We have introduced measures to lift the burden of our people,” Arroyo said, citing cash incentives and electric bill subsidies for the poor.

Inflation zoomed to 12.5 percent in August, a near 17-year high, the National Statistics Office reported last Friday.
