MANILA, Philippines — The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) is leaving it to local government and school officials whether or not to suspend classes in their respective areas, as typhoon “Marce” (international codename: Sinlaku) continues to bring rains to Metro Manila and other parts of the country.

Citing forecast from the state weather bureau, NDCC spokesman Anthony Golez said that rains in the metropolis would be “interspersed, with periods of clear sky.”

“We are not recommending the suspension of classes as we do not see any intense rain band hitting NCR [National Capital Region],” said Golez, concurrent deputy spokesman of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

“However, for areas easily flooded with sustained rains… local government units and school officials may make decisions on the suspension [of classes],” he added.

PAGASA expects Marce will leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Friday or Saturday.
