MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang cannot take action against Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) Chairman Camilo Sabio until the Supreme Court decides on his case, an official said Wednesday.

“Be assured that when we get the ruling officially, and when it becomes final and executory, we will make the appropriate steps,” Press Secretary Jesus Dureza told a news conference at the Palace.

The high tribunal had referred Sabio’s case to the Office of the Bar Confidant. Sabio allegedly tried to influence his brother, Court of Appeals Associate Justice Jose Sabio, to rule in favor of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) in its bid to wrest control of the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) from the Lopez family.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court suspended Justice Sabio for two months without pay, and dismissed Court of Appeals Associate Justice Vicente Roxas, for ruling in favor of Meralco.

The high tribunal also “severely” reprimanded Presiding Justice Conrado Vazquez Jr., reprimanded Associate Justice Bienvenido Reyes, and admonished Associate Justice Myrna Dimaranan-Vidal.

“I’m sure that the process within the CA and within the judiciary will go a long way in strengthening the faith of the public in the administration of justice,” Dureza said.

Aside from the call by his brother, Justice Sabio also claimed that businessman Francis de Borja tried to bribe him to inhibit himself from the case.
