MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo still trusts embattled Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) chairman Camilo Sabio, one of her spokesmen said Friday.

Sabio faces disbarment for allegedly trying to influence his brother, Court of Appeals Associate Justice Jose Sabio to rule in favor of the Government Service Insurance System in its bid to wrest control of the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) from the Lopez family.

“As of now, he [Sabio] still enjoys [the] full confidence and trust of the President because he’s still in that position,” Deputy Presidential Spokesman Anthony Golez told reporters in a chance interview at the Palace.

Golez maintained that as a presidential appointee, Sabio’s fate ultimately depended on the President.

Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said that it would wait for the Supreme Court’s decision on Sabio’s case before deciding whether or not to sanction him.
