MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is pushing through with her trip to the United States next week to address the United Nations General Assembly and to meet with the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conference, Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said Wednesday.

“President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has decided to proceed with her planned visit to New York to attend the High-Level Debate of the 63rd United Nations General Assembly and for other high-level meetings with global leaders,” Dureza told reporters before the start of the Philippine economic briefing in Makati City.

The President reconsidered going to the US upon the “strong recommendation” of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN Hilario Davide, Dureza told reporters before the start of the Philippine economic briefing in Makati City.

Arroyo will inform OIC Secretary General Edmeleddin Ihsanoglu of the new peace policy of her government, Dureza said.

He said the President would also “express appreciation to the OIC for its continuing support, and will strengthen the dialogue for peace, indicating also the Philippines commitment to harmonious relations with the Islamic world, reflected in the Philippine request for OIC observer status.”

Dureza said the President would also meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and push for the candidacy of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago to the International Court of Justice.

While no specific date has been set yet for Arroyo’s departure, Dureza said she would leave “on time” for the UN General Assembly on September 23.
