MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang again rejected calls from Roman Catholic bishops to scrap the Value Added Tax (VAT), claiming it was helping, not burdening, the poor.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the government has been using VAT collections to fund pro-poor programs.

“If we have no VAT, we will have to source from other activities to fund our programs for the poor,” Ermita told reporters at the Palace.

On Thursday, Caloocan Bishop Deogracia Iñiguez, Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo, and Novaliches Bishop Antonio Tobias led a prayer rally in Manila calling on government to scrap the VAT.
