MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang warned unscrupulous traders they would be punished if they import milk products from China despite a government ban.

“If there are importers who violate provisions of the Consumer Act, there are punishments for their actions, among others, cancellation of the license of the importers,” Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.

“That’s the least I can tell you, licenses can be suspended as importers,” he said.

After the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) announced the ban, it began checking grocery aisles for milk products from China, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said.

The checks have so far not yielded any banned products, she said.
