MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will arrive back in the country before dawn Saturday, after what a spokesman called a “very, very successful” trip to the United States, where she addressed the 63rd United Nations General Assembly and met with several world leaders.

Arroyo was one of four head that addressed the UN body. In her speech, she called for a “strong” UN and “rigorous” cooperation among nations to combat the looming global economic crisis, brought about by a crumbling United State economy.

She also met with Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) secretary general Elmeddin Ihsanoghu on the peace process in Mindanao, which was stalled by fresh fighting between government forces and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels.

“It was a very, very successful trip. I can say that. Once again, the President raised our country’s flag,” deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez, who was with Arroyo, told state-run radio station dzRB.

“The President showed how our nation remained strong in the face of rising food and oil prices,” Golez said, before he boarded the aircraft in San Francisco, California that would fly Arroyo and her party back to Manila.

Arroyo and her party stopped over in San Francisco, from New York, where her official engagements were held, before returning to Manila.

She will back in the country between 5 to 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Golez said.

Arroyo is scheduled to attend ceremonies at which retiring Director General Avelino Razon Jr. would relinquish his post as chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to Deputy Director General Jesus Verzosa.
