MANILA, Philippines — (UPDATE) Press Secretary Jesus Dureza will stay another day in New York City where he was hospitalized for gastritis or inflammation of the mucous lining of the stomach, a presidential spokesman said.

Dureza remained confined at the New York Presbyterian Hospital as President Gloria Macapgal-Arroyo and her party took off from San Francisco for Manila after midnight Friday (early Friday afternoon in Manila), deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez said.

“He was found to be suffering from gastritis. This affects the lining of the stomach and is very painful,” Golez, a medical doctor, told state-run dzRB radio.

“Secretary Dureza is going to stay another day in New York. Hopefully, tomorrow [Saturday], he will be flying back to San Francisco, then to Manila,” said Golez, who is with Arroyo’s party.

Arroyo was in New York this week to address the 63rd United Nations General Assembly and hold bilateral talks with several world leaders and the secretary general of the influential Organization of Islamic Conference.

Dureza was admitted to the hospital Wednesday evening (Thursday morning in Manila) due to “unbearable” stomach pains, according to a Palace statement.

The press secretary missed two dinner appointments, one with Permanent Philippine Representative to the United Nations Hilario Davide Jr., and another with reporters covering Arroyo’s trip, due to his hospitalization.

“He [Dureza] is generally feeling well now and out of pain,” Malacañang said.
