MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo rued her “inaccurate” portrayal in media, saying “innuendos and rumors” were being passed off as fact.

In an interview on GMA 7 television late Sunday evening, Arroyo also reiterated her resolve to fight corruption and uplift the economy in the less than two years left in her term.

Asked by anchor Mel Tiangco how she saw her portrayal in the news, the President said, “Inaccurate, yes, yes,” before bursting into laughter.

“Kagaya ng sabi ko, madaming innuendo at rumor na naging, pagalabas naging fact [Like I said, there are many innuendoes and rumors that become fact when they are put out].”

Nevertheless, she said: “I don’t want this interview to be a quarrel with media…I want to be positive.”

Through Arroyo’s seven years in office, she has been bombarded with corruption scandals. Among the most serious charge against her was her alleged use of the military to cheat her way to a fresh six-year term in the 2004 elections.

Likening herself to her father, the late former president Diosdado Macapagal, Arroyo said, “I want to say that ako rin, galit din ako sa katiwalian [I too am also mad at corruption] and I do my best to fight corruption with government.”

“Pagod na ang taumbayan sa pagwawatak-watak, gusto ng taumbayan, isang lider na masipag magtatrabaho para mapalitan ang sistema and that is what I’m trying to do [Our countrymen are tired of divisiveness. They want a leader who will work to change the system, and that is what I’m trying to do],” she said.

“I’m trying to work hard every day to be able to bring permanent change in our economy para sa ganun makakaabot tayo sa ating hinahangad na moderno at masaganang bansa [so that we will attain our goal of a modern and progressive nation],” she said.
