MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Monday wished Eddie Villanueva well after the evangelist and administration critic hinted of another crack at the presidency in 2010.

“We will always wish him well whatever his inclination and decision might be in relation to the coming elections,” presidential adviser on political affairs Gabriel Claudio said in a statement.

Claudio added he knew that Villanueva, who heads the Jesus Is Lord (JIL) movement, would make his decision guided by “prayerful discernment.”

At a news conference before the 30th anniversary celebration of the JIL in Manila on Saturday, Villanueva said he was waiting for a sign on whether or not to run for president again, but added he is hoping “God says no.”

An erstwhile ally of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Villanueva ran on a “Diyos at Bayan [God and Country]” platform of reforms in the 2004 elections and placed fourth in a five-way race.

Arroyo won the elections but was hounded by allegations that she used the military to defeat her nearest rival, popular movie actor Fernando Poe Jr., who died seven months after the bitterly contested polls.
