MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang is considering asking China to “help out” businessmen in the Philippines who imported milk products contaminated with melamine, Trade Secretary Peter Favila said Monday.

Favila said Health Secretary Francisco Duque asked him to “make the presentation with the Chinese Embassy, if there’s a way the Chinese government can help out.”

Asked if the importers were seeking reimbursement, Favila said: “From the way I understood it from [Secretary] Duque, may paraan ba na makabawi naman [is there a way to recover] because [the importers] incurred huge losses.”

Favila said importers were complaining that they bought the milk products “in good faith” not knowing that it was contaminated with melamine, a toxic chemical that causes kidney failure.

The Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) has found melamine in two milk products from China — Greenfood Yili Fresh Milk and Mengniu Drink — and cleared 28 others. Tests on other products have been set.

Favila said the milk contamination would be on the agenda of the regular Cabinet meeting at the Palace on Tuesday.

The Philippine government has banned the sale of milk products from China after thousands of Chinese babies developed kidney problems from taking milk laced with melamine.
