MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the implementation of a P2.17-billion Philippine Energy Efficiency Project (PEEP), which aims to significantly reduce the country’s energy consumption, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Wednesday.

Under the PEEP, the government projects reductions in annual power consumption by 450 megawatts and oil importation costs by $120 million, Ermita told his regular Wednesday news conference at the Palace.

The PEEP calls for the conversion of government vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG) engines, and switching to fluorescent lighting fixtures from incandescent, Ermita said.

“The President instructed [the government] to effectively implement all these programs,” Ermita said.

The National Economic Development Authority-Investment Coordination Committee (NEDA-ICC) approved the PEEP last September.
