MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang is keeping its hands off efforts to unseat Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio.

Earlier this week, allies of Lilia Pineda, whom Panlilio beat in the 2007 gubernatorial race in the President’s home province, filed a petition before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for a recall election.

“It is something internal to the people of Pampanga,” Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said, adding, “That is allowable under law. That will have to be dealt with by the Comelec.”

Pineda is said to be close to the President, as is another candidate who lost to Panlilio in the last election, former Pampanga vice governor and movie actor Mark Lapid.

In 2007, Panlilio revealed that he received P500,000 after a meeting between local government executives and Malacañang.

The money was alleged to be a bribe to ensure local officials’ support for Arroyo, who was then facing an impeachment complaint, which was eventually killed by her legislator allies.

Arroyo is facing another impeachment complaint, filed last week, over, among other issues, the alleged overprice of the botched $329-million national broadband network project.
