MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines and the European Commission (EC) will start negotiations to draft a cooperation agreement that will serve as the framework of relations between the country and the European Union (EU), Malacañang said Friday.

The decision was reached during a meeting between President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and EC President Jose Manuel Barroso in Beijing on Friday, on the sidelines of the 7th Asia-Europe Meeting, the Palace said in a statement.

“President Arroyo emphasized that the cooperation agreement would not only benefit Philippine trade in Europe, but would open wide opportunities for greater cooperation,” the statement said.

“Both leaders expressed satisfaction on the level of relations between the Philippines and the EU, and look forward to a more enhanced collaboration that the partnership agreement would offer,” it said.

The EC is the executive branch of the 27-member European Union.
