MANILA, Philippines — Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago’s loss in her bid for a seat in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is a gain for the country since she could continue her work at the Senate, Malacañang said Friday.

“Senator Miriam would have been a good member of the tribunal, but we have to submit to the results of the balloting,” Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said.

“I think Senator Miriam is probably more needed here in the country, that could be the beneficial gain the defeat in the balloting,” he said.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had campaigned hard for Santiago’s election to the ICJ.
