MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would rather immerse herself in work rather than sulk like a child over recent surveys showing continued low approval ratings, Malacañang said Wednesday.

An independent survey by Pulse Asia Inc. showed Arroyo’s public approval rating stood at 27 percent while her public trust rating was at 24 percent in October as her government continues to be besieged with corruption allegations.

“Surveys are surveys. We’ll just focus on undertaking specific programs and projects to improve the quality of life of our people. Meaning, we should not be pushed back by the results of such surveys,” Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said during a news conference at the Palace.

“Otherwise, wala tayong gagawin kundi magmukmok sa isang tabi [all we will do is sulk in one corner]…Like a child in one corner, sulking, whispering his sentiments to himself,” he said.

Ermita added: “I always say that leaders are not meant to be popular, they are meant to be leaders to undertake things that they think are good.”
