MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo rallied the Filipino-American community to press US lawmakers to convene a bicameral meeting to pass a bill granting equal rights to Filipino veterans of World War II.

Arroyo said she instructed Ambassador to the US Willy Gaa to lead Filipino-Americans in urging the US Senate and House of Representatives to meet on the bill even before the new Congress opens.

“Filipino Americans here in the United states, let us urge the US Congress to act now, to organize the bicameral committee, to reconcile Senate bill 1315 and House bill 6897, so it can become a veterans equity law,” she said in a speech in Chicago, Illinois, which was
aired on government television on Wednesday.

“This is the first time in the history of our advocacy that the bill finally passed both houses of [the US] Congress. Let’s not waste that and have to go back to first base again in the next Congress,” she said.

Filipino World War II veterans have been fighting for decades for equal recognition as their American counterparts.

Arroyo is in the United States to speak before an interfaith dialogue organized by the United Nations in New York.
