MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang said it was “premature” to suspend Philippine National Police Chief Director General Jesus Verzosa and Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno without “quantum of evidence” linking them to the controversial Russia trip of a group of police generals.

“We are waiting for the quantum of evidence required to be brought forth which will enable us to make an informed decision,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said in a statement.

“We believe it would be premature to make any pronouncement at this point,” she said.

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago had called for the suspension of Verzosa and Puno, even as retired police Director Eliseo dela Paz took full responsibility for the incident, when he testified before the Senate last Saturday.

Dela Paz was held for questioning at the Moscow Airport on October 11 for not declaring the €105,000 euros (P6.9 million) that he was carrying. He said it was the “contingency fund” of the eight-man PNP delegation to an Interpol conference in St. Petersburg.
