MANILA, Philippines — For as long as senators do not get the answers they want from former agriculture undersecretary Jocelyn Bolante, the investigation into the so-called fertilizer fund scam will be like “squeezing blood from stone” and go on “until the end of time,” Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said Monday.

Bolante appeared before the Senate blue ribbon committee last week, after evading lawmakers for three years, and cleared President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of involvement in the alleged diversion of P728 million in fertilizer funds to her 2004 campaign chest, which he is accused of engineering.

“The problem is the critics…those who want to pin him [Bolante] down. [They] will never be satisfied with his answers. No matter how maybe truthful he is, they will never believe it. Maybe they are trying to squeeze blood from stone, that’s the problem,” Gonzalez told reporters in Malacañang.

“This is a question of them asking the questions and accepting the answers, so they ask the questions [and] they will keep on pounding on him what answer they want to receive from him. If he does not give it, this will go on ad infinitum, until the end of time,” he said.
