Arroyo to call command conference
To assess military’s internal security operations
MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will convene a command conference of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) leadership in Malacañang on Thursday evening to assess the military’s internal security operations.
The AFP will report to Arroyo that it is on track to meet her 2010 deadline to defeat the communist insurgency, destroy Islamic extremist groups, and contain Moro rebels, said Lieutenant General Rodrigo Maclang, the deputy chief of staff.
Armed Forces chief of staff General Alexander Yano and top military officials are expected to attend the conference, including the heads of the major services: Army chief Lieutenant General Victor Ibrado, Navy chief Vice Admiral Ferdinand Golez, and outgoing Air Force chief Lieutenant General Pedrito Cadungog.
“The command conference will focus on the year-end AFP ISO [internal security operations] assessment. We are on track,” Maclang said in a text message.
The closed-door conference is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
