MANILA, Philippines—President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, as the country’s self-proclaimed anti-drug “czar,” will make sure she will score “victories,” her spokesman said.

“With the President at the helm of the drive, you can be sure that we better have some victories,” said Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, who is also concurrent presidential spokesman.

“There will be no sacred cows in this. This drive will go all the way,” Ermita said. “Anyone who is involved, whoever they will be, they will have to account before the law.”

Asked if the President expects to catch “big fish” during her stint as anti-drug “czar,” Ermita said: “Let’s expect that.”

“I’m sure this is a challenge to the PDEA [Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency] and other law enforcement agencies engaged in the anti-drug campaign. You have to show your wares very well,” he said.

Arroyo appointed herself as head of the country’s drive against illegal drugs Tuesday, as she asked the Department of Justice and the PDEA, which had been at odds over a bribery controversy, to work together.

Agents of the PDEA had claimed to have refused bribes of between P3 million to P50 million for the release of three scions of prominent families — Richard Brodett, Jorge Joseph, and Joseph Tecson — who allegedly supplied ecstasy and cocaine to upscale night clubs in Metro Manila.
