Mideast team’s term extended over Gaza
MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has extended for three months the term of the Presidential Middle East Preparedness Committee (PMEPC) because of the conflict in the Gaza strip.
Arroyo, through Executive Order 775, also ordered the release of an additional P3 million for the administrative and operational expenses of the committee, to be taken from the President’s Contingency Fund.
The term of the PMEPC ended on December 31, 2008. The EO, signed on January 14, extended its term until March 31 this year.
The PMEPC is headed by Special Envoy to the Middle East Roy Cimatu, a former chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
On Wednesday evening, thirty-four evacuees from Gaza arrived in Manila.
