Palace thanks Congress for budget nod
MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang thanked lawmakers for passing the P1.45-trillion national budget for 2009, which it said us crucial if the country is to weather the global recession.
However, deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez could not immediately say what action President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would take on the realignment of P50 billion from debt servicing to an economic stimulus package.
Arroyo has the power to veto items in the budget.
“We would like to convey our message of gratitude to all members of Congress. This is another step towards progress in 2009,” Golez told a news conference at the Palace.
Asked about the P50-billion realignment, Golez said: “We have yet to see the budget as approved by Congress. It will take time before the approved version will reach the Palace for review of the DBM [Department of Budget and Management]. Until then, we can’t say anything.”
In a separate statement, deputy presidential spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said: “The Palace trusts the collective wisdom of our lawmakers. The ratification will help us weather the global financial crisis.”
