Get idle youth in streetsweeping program
MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered police station commanders to “discipline” wayward youth and draft them into a government emergency employment program as streetsweepers.
Arroyo said she wanted out-of-school youth drafted into the Oyster or Out of School Youth Serving Towards Economic Resiliency program, one of the emergency employment programs government launched to cushion the blow of the global recession.
“Dapat ang chief of police ng bawat station ang magre-recruit ng out of school youth ng employment [The chiefs of every police stations should recruit out-of-school youth for employment],” she said in a speech during ceremonies marking the 18th anniversary of Philippine National Police (PNP) in Camp Crame on Monday.
“Bakit sabi nila yung chief of police? Kasi yung out-of-school youth na walang trabaho, yun yung siga-sigang kanto boy, ang tinitingala lang nila, yung pulis, kaya dapat yung pulis ang magrerecruit sa kanila, magdidisiplina sa kanila [Why the police chiefs? Because the out-of-school youth, the thugs on the street corners, look up to them, which is why it is the police who should recruit them, discipline them],” she said.
