MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has received an invitation from a group of lawmakers in the United States to visit there, Malacañang said Monday.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde could not immediately confirm whether Arroyo has accepted the invitation, which was sent to her office on January 30, a day before she left the country for Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF).

If Arroyo accepts the invitation, it will be her first visit to the US since President Barack Obama took office.

“There is an invitation for the President to go to the US… The scheduled is being finalized,” Remonde told a news conference at the Palace.

Remonde said the invitation was “in recognition of the leadership role that President Arroyo displayed in this part of the world.”

Speaking at the WEF in Davos last Saturday, Arroyo said the US should “do something” to reverse the global recession, which was sparked by the credit crunch in the US.
