New Comelec commissioner
MANILA, Philippines — (UPDATE) President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has appointed Elias Yusoph one of the commissioners of the Commission on Elections, a senior Cabinet official announced.
The new commissioner will take the place of the late Romeo Brawner Sr., who died of a heart attack in May 2008, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.
Yusoph was “highly recommended” by the Bishop-Ulama conference, which said his appointment “not only show[s] the sincerity of the government in appointing a Muslim [to] this constitutional body but will also infuse a new personality in the commission,” Ermita said.
Before he was named to the Comelec, Yusoph was city prosecutor of Marawi City, a post he held since 1987, Ermita said.
Prior to that, he was assistant city fiscal from 1983 to 1987, and special prosecutor from 1980 to 1983.
He passed the bar in 1977, Ermita said.
