MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang ordered law enforcement agencies to intensify their campaign against hoarders of cooking gas, as it acknowledged that this could be behind the shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

“We are now directing the NBI [National Bureau of Investigation] and all law enforcement agencies to intensify their campaign and detection of possible hoarding of LPG,” Press Secretary Cerge Remonde told a news conference at the Palace on Wednesday.

Remonde said the House of Representatives’ hearing on the LPG supply shortage Tuesday gave the “impression of hoarding.”

Asked if the Department of Energy (DoE) had been remiss in its duties, he said: “The Palace would rather avoid fingerpointing at this stage. Let us focus on making sure that supply [reaches the consumers]. Let us just see that the job is done.”

Remonde said it was a “valid assumption” that Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes continues to have the trust of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo because he has not been replaced.
