RP not on Clinton’s 1st foray abroad
MANILA, Philippines – United States Secretary of States Hillary Clinton will not stop by the Philippines when she visits Asia later this week, US Ambassador Kristie Kenney said Monday.
In her first foreign trip since becoming the US’ top envoy, Clinton will visit China, Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia, Kenney told reporters in a chance interview in Malacañang.
“It looks like, at this time, she won’t be able to add Manila to the trip… She doesn’t have time, as much as she’d like to,” Kenney said.
Kenney said US President Barack Obama wanted Clinton to go to Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world, as part of a “new and wonderful outreach to the Muslim world.”
Kenney was at the Palace, where she and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo witnessed the signing of a P73-million grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for environment protection and clean energy development projects in the Philippines.
Last week, Arroyo attended the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington DC, but was not able to meet Obama. She met with Clinton instead.
