Palace hands off on water rate hike
MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang will not contest the increase in Metro Manila water rates that will take effect on February 20.
Maynilad Water Services Inc., which handles the west concession zone in the metropolis, will raise its rates by P2.81 per cubic meter while Manila Water Co., which is in charge of the east zone, will adjust its rates by P2.27 per cubic meter.
“Tuloy yung in-announce nilang increase on February 20 [The increase they announced on February 20 will push through],” Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.
Ermita said the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) explained to the Palace that the increases cover inflation and foreign exchange fluctuations, as provided for in the concession agreement with the two water firms.
Ermita said the basic charge — P23.05 per cubic meter for Maynilad and P19.64 per cubic meter for Manila Water — will not be increased.
