MANILA, Philippines — First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo accused his critics of trying to “kill” him by linking him to a string of corruption scandals, the latest of which is the alleged rigging of bids for World Bank-funded road projects.

“They want to kill me. I don’t want to die yet,” Arroyo said in a television interview, as he stepped out of the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City, where he undergoes regular rehabilitation after undergoing heart surgery.

“Up to now, there is nothing against me, there is no evidence, everything is hearsay, there is no case that has ever prospered against me, no one has ever filed any case in the civil courts,” he said.

Mr. Arroyo skipped the Senate investigation into the World Bank controversy on Thursday, but sent his lawyer to explain his side.

His doctor told the Senate that Mr. Arroyo’s appearance at the hearing could endanger his life.
