Palace backs veterans’ fight
MANILA, Philippines—Malacañang is supporting Filipino war veterans in their fight for equal recognition and benefits as their American counterparts, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.
The war veterans scored last week when the US Congress approved a $198-million lump sum payment that will give each of them from $9,000 to $15,000, as part of President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus package.
But a law has yet to be passed that will restore the benefits taken away from the Filipino veterans by an earlier law.
“The fact alone na pinayagang bigyan ng lump sum, nirerecognize na nila (The fact that they were given lump sums means they were recognized)…. Therefore (Filipino veterans) should also be given health benefits burial benefits and other benefits,” Ermita said.
Asked if the Filipino veterans deserve the additional benefits, Ermita said. “Definitely, these are your grandfathers.”
