MANILA, Philippines — United States Ambassador Kristie Kenney advised Filipino World War II veterans to file their claims now for the lump sum payment they have been granted after US President Barack Obama signed the economic stimulus package.

Kenney said the US would make it easy for the veterans, most of whom are in their 80s, to file their claims.

“The veterans can start applying now…Each case will be looked at to make sure that [they are] the right people, that they are indeed eligible. In some cases it might take longer or less longer,” she said in an interview with reporters on the sidelines of a summit of the League of Cities in Mandaluyong City.

“We’re very busy getting ready for that. We’re going out [to] provinces to make sure we reach people personally. We have stations at the embassy, Camp Aguinaldo; we’re ready, eager to get moving,” she said.

Additional information on how to file claims is available at the US Embassy website, she said.

Kenney also reiterated that only living veterans are entitled to the lump sum.

“Unfortunately it doesn’t apply to them [dead veterans or their families]; the legislation is clear, you have to be alive,” she said.

Veterans living in the Philippines will receive $9,000 while those in the US will get $15,000. Around 18,000 veterans are expected to benefit from the payments.
